EXPERIENCE A DIFFERENT SIDE TO THE THAMESWhen most people think of the River Thames they are instantly drawn to the section that intersects the capital city. However, this river stretches approximately 214 miles (346 kilometres) across the country to it's source at Thames Head in Gloucestershire. The upper echelons of this river offer a more leisurely style of paddling than in the capital.
Beginning at Lechlade-on-Thames offers car parking, a pub, cafe and a canoe/SUP rental company. You can cast off from either the rental company's jetty or, if busy, a few metres up the bank. Paddling upstream towards Cricklade sees you going against a gentle flow - even if you're a beginner this shouldn't pose any issue. In fact it gives an extra boost on the return trip. This is a leisurely paddle passing fields, farms and stone houses. This part of the Thames isn't about distance, it's about having a relaxing paddle for a few hours. On sunny weekends or school holidays it does attract more people onto the river but there is still plenty of space to explore, quiet spots to escape and enjoy the nature that surrounds you. It is easy to forget anyone else is sharing the river with you. |
